# The Digital State of Portuguese SMEs in 2026: What 1,585 Verified Companies Reveal

## Why we publish data

Most "digital state" reports circulating in Portugal are built from surveys and perception. This one is not. It comes from the technical audit engine Vokzar uses internally to evaluate websites before any commercial contact, the same engine that has already audited thousands of Portuguese and Iberian sites.

We isolated the 1,585 Portuguese companies marked as active, with verified contact details, within that base, and re-ran the same technical criteria we already use in audits: indexation, performance, schema, readability for AI systems, and ecommerce-specific signals. This is not a representative sample of Portugal: it is an honest read of what we found in the companies we actually audited.

## What we measured

Each profile was scored across four axes: indexation and crawlability (does the site appear correctly on Google), technical performance (speed, Core Web Vitals), semantic structure (schema markup, headings, FAQs), and readability for generative engines (what we call AIO/GEO here: a system's ability to understand and correctly cite a business).

No private or client-identifiable data was used. Everything reported comes from signals that are publicly observable on each site: the same signals any visitor, crawler, or AI system can also see. The full methodology, including market and sector coverage, is described on /en/data/.

## Finding 1: Invisible clinics

221 of the 1,585 companies analyzed are clinics (dental, physiotherapy, veterinary, aesthetic) with weak AIO/GEO signals: no health-organization schema, no structured FAQ, no machine-readable service list, and, in many cases, inconsistent hours or address between the website and the Google Business Profile.

This matters because how people search for local health services is changing. When someone asks an AI assistant what the best dental clinic near them is, the system needs verifiable answers, and a clinic without those structured signals simply does not enter the conversation, regardless of how good the actual service is.

## Finding 2: Outdated CMS

132 companies in the base still run on content management systems with outdated versions, unmaintained plugins, or discontinued themes. In practice, that means slower pages, more vulnerabilities, and often HTML that hurts indexation: duplicate titles and descriptions, missing correct canonicals, resources blocked from crawlers.

An outdated CMS is not just a theoretical security risk. In our audit experience, it is the most common reason a company keeps paying for a website that works against it instead of for it: slower as the business grows online, harder to update, and increasingly expensive to fix.

## Finding 3: Failing stores

223 online stores in the base have at least one technical failure capable of interrupting the purchase path: product pages without schema, checkout with redundant steps, load times above what Google considers acceptable for Core Web Vitals, or a catalogue that is partly invisible to search.

The most common pattern is not a store that is technically broken: it is a store that looks fine to anyone testing it manually, but silently loses customers on mobile, in search, or at a checkout step nobody audits after launch.

## Decide now

None of these three problems requires rebuilding the business from scratch. It requires correct diagnosis and technical priority: fixing what blocks the most value first, not what is most visible or easiest to sell. That is the logic behind a technical audit, separating what is critical from what is secondary before spending budget.

There is also a concrete window right now in Portugal: public funding calls exist to support SME digitalization. A company that fixes these technical blockers before investing in marketing or expansion is protecting that investment, not just ticking a technical box.
